Our list below highlights the most capable vehicles currently on sale that we've evaluated. (And yes, we do have a couple more in the fleet that are ready to face our rock hill.) The list shows that fancy off-road-oriented, four-wheel-drive systems can help, but they aren't the be all end all for off-road capability. For example, while the Land Rovers make use of very sophisticated off-road electronics, they’re matched by vehicles with more rudimentary systems, like a Toyota Fortuner. So here the list :-

10. Maruti Suzuki Gypsy

Gypsy ticks all the right boxes. When talking about comfort and convenience, it offers you almost nothing. That’s because the car is only meant to do one thing – perform well off road. This is possible thanks to its 1.3-litre petrol engine that’s generates 80 bhp power and 103 Nm of torque.

9. Land Rover Defender

Defender is one of the best Land Rovers man has invented. The incredibly solid chassis, high ground clearance, amazing axle articulation and four-wheel drive gives a truly unstoppable off-roading experience. The car is powered by 2.2-litre diesel engine and is integrated with eight-speed gearbox.

8. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is much like the Toyota Fortuner with good off-road prowess. It sports a 2.5 litre diesel engine that makes 176 bhp of power and 400 Nm of torque. The appropriately massive look of the car makes it an excellent off-roader on any terrain. It is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission and a part-time 4x4 system.

7. Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class or G-Wagen as it was originally called has been in production for more than 35 years now. The basic shape remains unchanged and each model is hand produced. The new G63 AMG puts incredible power with a 5.5-litre V8 petrol engine developing up to 544 bhp.

6. Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner 4x4 offers the best of all worlds. It is powered by a 3-litre diesel engine that puts out 169 bhp and 343 Nm of torque. It is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. Pretty good off-roader and a great car if you want to head to places less travelled.

5. Tata Safari

Tata Safari comes with the essentials of an SUV along with premium features for the owner. The Safari Storme gets a 2.2-litre VariCOR engine producing 140 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. It might not be as fast or refined like the other modern off-roaders available in the market but it can definitely give a tough competition.

4. Range Rover Sport

Range Rover Sport has been one of the legendary off-roading vehicles. It makes the drive bearable where the roads disappear. Powered by 4.4-litre V8 engine that produces 335 bhp and 700Nm of Torque, the car takes sharp turns with ease. This car offers all the comfort of a sedan and is competent of passing through mountains and untamed trails.

3. Mahindra Scorpio

Another SUV offered by Mahindra is the Scorpio. The car means serious business, and with modern looks, it has the ability to pass through muddy tracks. The Scorpio is powered by 2.2-litre CRDe mHawk engine that produces 120 bhp and 290 NM of torque.

2. Mahindra Thar

Mahindra Thar is pretty much similar to Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in terms of what it offers to you. It has a torquey 2.5-litre diesel engine that generates 103 bhp of power. It’s solid, gets 4WD and high ground clearance makes it a potent package. If you want a car that takes you to places where there are no roads, then the Thar is a perfect companion.

1. Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler is a must-buy-car for all adventure seekers. There is a weird resemblance between the Wrangler and the Thar, but the Jeep is much wider and larger in size. The electronic rear-locking differential gives it a better control whether travelling on or off-road. The car is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel engine that churns out 197 bhp power.
